Oh wow...some of these answers are bad. Aristotle never claimed the world was round, but that's besides the point.

At any rate:
1) In 1453, Constantinople was captured by Mehmed II of the Ottoman Empire, closing off what had previously been Europe's link to the east.

2) New navigational technologies made it possible. The compass, astrolabe, etc. had reached Europe by this time, making European sailing a possibility. Furthermore, the caravel was developed around this time based on a variation of the Arabic qarib, making exploratory sea voyages viable.

3) As others said, the sheer profit that was to be made. The Crusades that had occured in the previous few centuries exposed Europe to the many luxuries and vast wealth of the east, and sparked a great desire for Asian goods such as spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, pepper, etc.), silk, porcelain, etc. By finding new routes to the east by sea, Europeans would no longer be reliant on Muslim nations to gain access to that wealth.

Asia was a lucrative trade business.

In addition to that, europeans were exploring the world in general.

because
#1.) people like erostatal said the world was round and if it was there had to be more than one or two or even three possible ways to the orient

#2.) the ships were being robbed by pirate along the old predictable routes
